John Sees Jesus

"Don't be afraid! I am the First and the Last, and the Living One. I was dead, but look - I am alive forever and ever, and I hold the keys of death and hades." Revelation 1:17-18

Today's Reading:  Revelation 1:12-20

In today’s reading John meets Jesus. He doesn’t greet him like an old friend, rather he falls down “at His feet like a dead man.” Rev 1:17

Let’s meditate on this one for a moment. Since childhood many of us have been shown pictures of a sweet loving Jesus who is said to be our very best friend. Although this is absolutely true, it does not help us to understand that Jesus is God and that God is the Holy, Eternal, Almighty and All Powerful Creator of the universe. We must first fear and respect God to know Him and love Him.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” Proverbs 9:10

However, look at what Jesus says to John, “Don’t be afraid!” Rev 1:17

This reveals to us that although we are to fear the Lord, we are not to be terrified. It is crucial for us to understand the proper view of Who Jesus Is and our relationship to Him. We need Jesus as our Savior because we are sinful people. It is for each person to choose to make Him the Lord of their life.

Daily Reflection: What will you do when you meet Jesus? John fell down at the feet of Jesus like a dead man. (Rev 1:17) However, Jesus says "Don't be afraid". What is your view of Jesus? The sweet Sunday School figure or the Lord of Lords and King of Kings? Is your personal relationship with Jesus everything it should be?
