Genesis Bible
Study – Chapter 39
By
Carri Pratt
“After
some time his master’s wife looked longingly at Joseph and said, “Sleep with me.”
Genesis 39:7
No matter how much you love
God, or how hard you try to live a good life, there is always someone, or
something, ready to steal your joy. (or in Joseph’s case, your coat)
When we look at Joseph we
see a boy becoming the man God created him to be. Here is an example of someone
trying to make a stand and a moral decision to say “No” to sin. However, when
we do this the world will push us back and attempt to get rid of us.
Why? Because as my twelve
year old son exclaimed to me the other day, “Mom, I just want to do what I want
to do, when I want to do it, and that should be okay!” I was actually
speechless after he said this and had to marinate for a few minutes over this
truly selfish remark.
Potipher’s wife was very
selfish in her desires to go against her husband and to sleep with Joseph.
Fortunately, Joseph saw the situation for what it was, a sin against a Holy
God. And how did he handle it? He ran! What a wonderful example, flee so that
we “may
not enter into temptation.” Luke 22:40
Life is full of challenges and many Christians know it
is no easier for believers in Christ Jesus, it is actually usually much
harder; but we know that our only true hope is Jesus, our comforter and
redeemer.
Joseph may have been thrown into prison for doing what
was right, but he made the better choice and God was with him.
“No temptation has overtaken you except
what is common to humanity. God is faithful, and He will not allow you to be
tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation He will also provide a way of escape so that you are
able to bear it.” 1 Corinthians 10:13
Challenge:
We may not understand the trials and temptations we face, but know this; do
what is pleasing to the Lord and He will never forsake you and He will NEVER
leave you! Hallelujah!
