I Want To Leave
A Legacy
by Amy Gentry
“These commandments that I give you today are
to be on your hearts. Impress them on
your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the
road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind
them on your foreheads. Write them on
the doorframes of your houses and on your gates…” Deuteronomy
6:6-9 NIV
1- Be on your heart (v.6)
You have to KNOW (have intimate knowledge of) the Word of God to understand it,
for it “to be on your hearts.” Leave a
legacy for your children of pointing to God’s Word. Show them all of their everyday situations
matter to the Lord and He wants to guide them through His Word.
2- Impress them on your children (v.7)
Impress used as a noun is defined as
“An act of making an impression or
mark.” Do you model God’s Word in front
of your children so that God’s Word is becoming more and more real, alive,
active, relevant, and tangible?
3- Tie them as symbols on your... (v.8)
Are you a Sunday only Christian? Do you consistently remind your children,
verbally or symbolically, that as Christians we are set apart as holy and therefore we are accountable
to the Lord and not our culture for our actions?
4- Write them on the door frames...
(v.9)
Seeing is believing - If your
children see you burning the midnight oil with a bible in one hand and a
highlighter in the other - Model
daily bible reading, journaling, devotions, prayer, biblical priorities, and conversations
of what the Lord is doing in your life.
“I want to leave a legacy
How will they remember me?
Did I choose to love?
Did I point to you enough to make a mark on things?
I want to leave an offering
A child of mercy and grace
who blessed Your name unapologetically
And leave that kind of legacy”
