Who Is The Holy Spirit - Week 02

Mentor Moms teaching Spiritual Truth to our children
Week Two: Jesus, John and The Holy Spirit
Carri Pratt

We continue to discover the important work of the Holy Spirit in the world by moving into the New Testament and reviewing three key texts of Scripture from the Gospel of Luke.

John the Baptist is filled with the Holy Spirit
in his mother's womb:
"But the angel said to him:
Do not be afraid, Zechariah,
because your prayer has been heard.
Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son,
and you will name him John.
14 There will be joy and delight for you,
and many will rejoice at his birth.
15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord
and will never drink wine or beer.
He will be filled with the Holy Spirit
while still in his mother’s womb." Luke 1:13-15

Mary is told she will give birth to Jesus
through The Holy Spirit:
30 "Then the angel told her:
Do not be afraid, Mary,
for you have found favor with God.
31 Now listen:
You will conceive and give birth to a son,
and you will call His name Jesus.
32 He will be great
and will be called the Son of the Most High,
and the Lord God will give Him
the throne of His father David.
33 He will reign over the house of Jacob forever,
and His kingdom will have no end.
34 Mary asked the angel, “How can this be, since I have not been intimate with a man?”
35 The angel replied to her:
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you,
and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.
Therefore, the holy One to be born
will be called the Son of God." Luke 1:30-35

The Holy Spirit at the Baptism of Jesus
21 "When all the people were baptized, Jesus also was baptized. As He was praying, heaven opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on Him
in a physical appearance like a dove.
And a voice came from heaven:
You are My beloved Son.
I take delight in You!"

The Holy Spirit carried out the amazing duty of connecting God to His Son Jesus in human form; as well as to John the Baptist. The Holy Spirit also took the form of a dove and was physically present at the baptism of Jesus. Luke records all three members of the trinity, The Father God, Son Jesus, and Holy Spirit beautifully communing on Earth for one brief moment in time.

Family Highlights:
  • The Holy Spirit carries out important work on Earth for God
  • The Holy Spirit filled John the Baptist and fills us when we become believers
  • Jesus is unique in that He is the Son of God through the Holy Spirit, not through a human man
  • The Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus at His baptism
